Oregon | I apologize in advance for asking about next winter when this one isn’t behind us yet but...trying to get a crop plan together for the guy who writes my checks. We have a lot of open ground this year that will be planted to summer annuals. Looking at cereal rye to go in between sept 1-15 for a winter grazing. Never done it. Which varieties have you had luck with? Or maybe rye isn’t the answer. Cows don’t come home until oct. 15 and will have other pasture until Dec. 15. Should be able to irrigate once. Summer annuals are half acreage to millet/cowpeas, other half to sudangrass/cowpeas for hay. Do I need a burn down on these crops before no-tilling rye? Add something else to the rye? Central Oregon, thank you. | |
