I don't know about relative losses during chopping. While feeding, the face size will be important. Bags will have a much smaller exposed face compared to a pile. In the heat of summer, when you have to use x amount to stay ahead of spoilage, I think you'd find the bag to have the clear advantage. Somewhere I'm sure you can find recommendations of how many inches you need to feed out per day to stay fresh.
