Pull a 12 inch soil sample. A nitrate test from Midwest labs is $6 dollars with recommendations. It could save you far far more if you have N.
Residual nitrogen doesn't show up on alfalfa or soybean nitrate test, they use all of the soil N before they produce their own. Any N that is there would be tied up in the nodules.
