It depends on how you figure things and the year in question. Lots of things happen to N in the soil and almost none of it is good. How much n can your soil hold? Do you mineralize 5lbs of n per % o.m. or 20lbs. Does n leach out, denitrify, or stay available? Is your root system 12" deep or 36" deep? Do you have a stand capable of 300bu or 100bu? What form of n are you applying, when, and where is it placed?
