Sunnyside, WA | We have both asphalt and concrete. The asphalt is much older and has held up ok until we started getting larger mixer wagons. Then the low, wet areas have been breaking up. Started pouring concrete ourselves about 5 years ago. With our labor, concrete is cheaper than asphalt. Pour 6" or up to 8 or 10" in the low areas where water drains. I prefer the asphalt for corn silage since the acid can really eat into the concrete. Alfalfa haylage is better on concrete IMO since the moisture is usually lower.
Drive over piles with double plastic can be the same quality as bags. We still use 14' bags for triticale since it is very difficult to pack in a drive over pile under 65% moisture. I have been disappointed to still find some spoilage in bags and the shrink is higher in bags vs our drive over piles. Bags are still on dirt and really should be on concrete to reduce spoilage, but then I might as well do a pile or pit | |
