Subject: RE: Question about all the flooding in E/Ne Nebraska and washed out bridges

east central ND
Back in the 60’s & early 70’s a lot of smaller township worn/rotted/unsafe wooden bridges in my area were replaced with culverts. Cheap an easy. Only problem is, a 8’ span bridge was replaced with a 5’ or 6’ culvert. Was fine in drier years. Wet years had minor issues. And then, over the years, some upstream water districts did some “improvements”. Suddenly a wet year is major problems........ lots of damage.

Some times, 20 or 30 years later, the cheap fix is not so cheap.

I feel for the flooded folks.

I am a mile and a half down stream from an 1950’s earthen water shed damn. The drainage area above the damn has been increased about 20% with “modern” drainage, bigger culverts, ditch cleaning and deepening......... It fills in 3 days. Used to take 2 weeks. Lot of snow here, so this years melt might be a problem up here too.

After the melt, all the new tile will get us in the feild, maybe a bit late with good weather, but......
