North West Ukraine | Last year, I posted corn harvesting pics (https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=815656&posts=82&highlight=Ukraine&highlightmode=1#M7094099) and some of you asked me to follow on over the next season. The first crop we started the new season with - winter wheat and barley. It was drilled on 23rd of September right after harvesting 105 bu/ac sunflowers followed by vertical tillage. Before planting, we have applied 80 lbs/ac of K2O with potash and 36 lbs/ac of P2O5 with MAP 12-52. The key issue at that time was to catch the soil moisture and have the even emergence. For that reason it was drilled 2" deep. However, due to the lack of moisture over the Autumn, we`ve got unsatisfactory tillering. Yield goal is still 100+ bu/ac, so the first thing to do at the start of the new season was to apply enough N to stimulate good tillering at early spring. Three weeks ago, I spread 60 lbs/ac of N (ammonium nitrate) out of 147 of the total N to be applied. It was followed by 70 lbs/ac of AMS to support N with enough sulfur. The next step in fertility program will be adding another 60 lbs/ac of N at the end of tillering before jointing stage. Now, we`ve got rather low temperatures but above freezing point which is right what is needed for forming new tillers instead of growing in upright direction. It looks like it works.
