Subject: Freestall barn ventilation

We are going to replace the tin on our freestall barn as it's 22 years old and due for replacement. It's a natural vent barn so there's an 18" wide open ridge in the center of the barn. Rain and snow blowing in has always been a problem for us. We are considering capping the ridge and installing power vents (exhaust fans). There would be a fan roughly every 40' pulling air out of the barn.

Is this a good idea? Our thought is that on stale summer days we can still remove air and when it gets below 0 degrees we could shut some off to raise the temperature just enough so manure doesn't freeze rock hard. Also would prevent rain and snow from spoiling the feed

Thanks in advance!
