Subject: RE: Tillage Radish Question

NC Kansas
It's not a quick fix or a direct replacement for a ripper shank in one year. If you have a hard pan, yes it will effect radish just like any other plant. Ideally if you "have" to rip an area then try to get a cover crop planted asap and keep roots growing in that area as much as possible. Overtime a no-till/cover crop system will mellow the soil those root will eventually push through. People get into a vicious tillage cycle and can't get out. They hear the term tillage radish and think they can insert in between tillage passes and expect a miracle.

We use them regularly in a cover crop mix after wheat, typically graze the mix if we can. but probably 12-15 years ago we transitioned to no-till with an already diverse rotation that included wheat, corn/milo, beans, and sunflowers(tremendous tap root) occasionally. They really do keep the ground mellow and help with compaction in a system but they won't work miracles.
