I see a lot of folk fall into a spiral where they need to rent 3x as much land to ‘male it’ on rented ground, and then need bigger equipment to cover it all, so the. They need to rent more ground to make the machinery payments, so they need bigger machinery.... after 20 years they are a big farmer but the bank still owns more than they do, I don’t know what they gained.
Then the whole 20 years, farming junk ground because no one will put in tile, short term leases means soil stayed low fertility, etc.
To each their own, and it is certainly more possible/ needed to rent then to own when starting out, but the satisfaction isnt there for me personally. I’d rather get a job in town and have the nights and weekends off if I’m not working for myself farming anyhow.
