Holland, Indiana (SW IN)
We are located pretty much south of you so our residue will decompose more than you being 100 miles North
With irrigated corn you will be fungicideing and with plenty of water having a bunch of good stalks very heavy residue
I think you will have a hard time planting wheat NT unless you plant the wheat in 15" rows with RTK to keep the rows 7" off the corn row -- I think if you work ground at all before wheat you will work it a bunch to get a good even stand of wheat
We Use VT on all our corn stalks usually one time in the fall and most times 1X in the spring
There is no better use of irrigation than wheat DC beans rotated with corn
BUT you better have ample labor when wheat is 20% moisture and dry it and be ready to take care of the wheat
Good luck with your new challenge -- irrigation -- it can be frustrating -- seems it should be easier

Dan
