When I was helping my dad, he calved 800 from Jan 1 to May. It was not fun. Night shift for 4 months then planting started.
By this time of year, you had to save the newborns and the 500 others running in the snow/rain/muck.
I’d bitch about too long a season and he’d say the barns can’t handle everyone that quick. I’d say we should preg test like everyone else. He’d say I can see if a cow has a calf by her side. I’d say this sucks let’s calve late. Nope we’re out in the field then.
I finally said I’m not making a dime helping you so I’m on my own.
Now he does 500 on grass in June. No vet bill, no scours, much less stress.
Funny how that all worked out. |
