Watch what those 4-500 lbs calves sell for in Yankton or Mitchell around the first of May, they bring very good money as there is demand for light calves to graze by people with a little grass and don't want to fool with cows. Now work backwards what does it take to hit that market. My plan when I get old and can't fight weather anymore is a herd of easy keeping herefords bred to an easy calving angus bull calving second half of May and June on green grass. I don't give a hoot about weaning weights or yearling weights as I'm gunning for the light calf May market, wean during a break in the winter weather and background on oats corn mixture with free choice grass hay, gotta keep em green, might be the easiest money in the cattle business.
