Brassring, The old saying I remember hearing is "Plant your oats and corn in the dust, your bins will bust." The old timer who explained it to me 45 or so years ago, said the roots followed the moisture down deep into the soil. When the rains came the crops used all the moisture. If the soil was saturated when planted, the roots did not grow deep.
