Update! Google is your friend!
Did a 'hard restart' and all is well. I held both the start button and the home button for 10 seconds, then an icon showed on the screen to plug into the charger. An hour later and it was on!!!
Grandma asked granddaughter if Grandpa yelled at her. She replied "No, but he sure seemed mad".
