As you've read here, your source is way off. Wheat straw is superior to oat straw as bedding and will go about twice as far as corn stalks.

It also works very good as roughage in the ration - less sorting that with corn stalks or soybean stubble.

I've never been around growing wheat, but aren't the beards on the kernels? This is straw - no kernels.
