I think the biggest problem is that you are using it like a faucet. They are designed more to be opened once to empty the tote and then closed. Repeat a few times, etc. they are also designed to prevent leaks during transport.

I think what you really want is a nice nylon ball valve in a pipe or hose and just leave the tote valve open. You might also plumb in handwash faucet.
