You can't even begin to imagine the problems with actually relying on technology.  It very well could be gone in the blink of an eye, big solar flares that can cause all kinds of havoc on electrical systems are not rare by any stretch of the imagination.  All computers live on borrowed time when you look at that.  If there was a way to short the internet it would pay big at some point.  Probably not too far in the future.
