Michigan | Moving from Trimble CFX-750 Omni* to Deere 4640 display and SF3 for autosteer in our 8235R. We currently run an integral 16R22" 7300 vertical fold planter for soybeans, corn, and dry beans with Orthman Adjust-a-Rate II hydraulic drive. Planter overall is in good condition. We are looking to [finally] do some variable rate seeding & starter-fertilizer application with the planter; the same tractor will be used for spraying. We're installing a SeedStar XP controller and ISO harness on the planter to be able to control with the 4640 (and ditch the Orthman control box & old ComputerTrak 250). Raven 440 for liquid (I understand the 4640 can communicate with the 440 for rate/section control).
As I understand, the SeedStar can control up to 16 sections via RowCommand clutches for planting. Roughly how expensive are the RowCommand clutch setups? Are air clutches a better setup? We have quite a few square-shaped fields, but many of them require overlap along the sides of the field; right now they just get the full planter-width as we have no disconnects. Using the calculator available here - http://www.agmanager.info/guidance-section-control-profit-calculato... - it seems to make sense for having row-shutoffs. Somewhat new to the precision ag setups, as we've really only used GPS for guidance lines in the past. Open to feedback.
