I think either way would work if done correctly. We have remodeled our parlor numerous times. Sometimes they have had plates and screwed them into the concrete. There times they have cures the concrete, put the pipe into the hole and epoxied around it. Both work well. I think the pipe in the concrete would be stronger. There are also no plates or bolt heads for the cattle to somehow manage to step on. The benefit of the plate is it raises the pipe a little out of the manure to keep the rust away. I dont think we've had the bolts/increments come loose either.
