Floyd County, Iowa | Not sure if you are "for real", but it's like any other insurance. Do you insure your home? Your vehicles? Health?
It's insurance! If you're looking to get your premium, plus extra, back every year, or want to use it to supplement the income, you will have a rude awakening. The numbers you state indicate you want to insure a profit, that's why it sounds high, which it is.
I have a job in town, too, but I'm not working there to subsidize the farm, just enhance our non-farm living. The farm stands on it's own.
I only insure to a value of my inputs. If I have a crop failure, at least I won't lose the farm. But I can't afford to try and insure a profit.
