Well I'm a 3rd generation and have worked and sacrificed just like the first 2.
I have added to the operation and have saved money.
Don't plan on ever selling any of the farm, but don't know what will happen after I am gone.
I always hated how people looked down on the 3rd generation like they are just a bunch of lazy bums.
Seen my share 1st, 2nd, and 4th generation operations fail over the years.
Lots of times a farming operation ceases is because for what ever reason there is no next generation to take over.

Like mentioned above the scenario has played out many times in the past and is still going, but it's not always because someone squanders it. There has been more than a few farms/ranches sold due to the first generation needing to go into the nursing home or other issue. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of 2nd, 3rd or whatever bums that waste a lot of others' hard work but sometimes things just happen. People are getting better about protecting assets but sometimes it's unavoidable to lose some.
