Floyd County, Iowa | When my Dad passed, I was the executor of his estate.
All money coming in and going out had to go through the estate attorney. The banks automatically freeze accounts activity at the time of death, as soon as they are notified, and can't be used until the estate is set up at the courthouse by an attorney.
The money that came in was addressed to Dad, without "estate".
Deposits went through the lawyer.
Money paid out was done after approval by the lawyer, out of his new estate account, which had to be set up upon his death.
I submitted the bills, the lawyer wrote out the checks, I signed them, and the lawyer sent them. Dad's regular checks were no longer valid to write.
The executor of the estate in the OP's situation will (should) know how it works. I was given instructions by the attorney when he had the "executorship" recorded at the courthouse. | |
