Well, sounds like the calf was put on trial, found guilty and sentenced to life on your place. Since he's now filed an appeal, he has to provide evidence that the trial should be redone. The judge will probably allow it and you'll have to retry the case but the ball is in your court. You could offer him to accept an Alfred plea otherwise if his evidence doesn't hold up, the calf is still yours and all you have caused is undue stress and heartache on his and your families.

And last I checked, the court system moves at a snail's pace and there's always the possibility that the calf will have made it to market before things get settled.

He's just got to weigh the risk and reward and make his decision which way he wants to go.
