"On the other hand, people are living longer on average."

That average is based on the reduced infant mortality.  People still live about the same amount but the "average" has risen.  Add to that the advances in medicine that skew the numbers.  Some people wouldn't be here if it weren't for transplants, antibiotics, radiation, advanced surgery and chemotherapy.
