Subject: Got some questions for the fellas that calve later in the year

North West MO
Where do you calve at? Do you tag your calves at birth? If you calve in a small acreage to keep them from calving in the ditches how do you keep cattle from pushing your fences over trying to get to get to green grass? We have 4 calving pastures. They are fenced acres from a large pasture to keep cattle from ditches. Here in NW Missouri if you can drive a tractor on it and there’s 4” of black dirt on it Grain Farmers own it so our pastures have ditches. Our calving pastures are any where from 8 acres to 18. We run 30 to 40 head in each calving pasture. We usually turn out on grass midway through May right after we work the calves and by then the cows are pretty hard to please. They don’t want hay or corn silage, they want GRASS. I think it’s tuff just getting through May with out the cows tarrying up all the fences. If hot wire is your answer... it’s going to be a hard pass from me.
