Subject: Electral short in barn lights

So long story short the barn lights were on when I went out. I went back like 10 minutes later and the breaker had tripped. I went to trip the breaker with the light switch on and it tripped out right away before the lights even came on. I switched breakers and it did the same thing again. Thought maybe it was a weak breaker but it wasnt. So now what I am wondering is what will be the easiest way to trouble shoot where my problem is. How often do switches go bad. The switch that is in the barn is one of the brown style ones and has been in for probably 20 years. If it isn't the switch then what is the next step go to all individual sockets and unhook them and see if one will light up and then continue down the line. All help is greatly appreciated as it is hard to calf heifers in the dark. Thanks
