You're absolutely correct, Aaron. If it had been about slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation would have preceded the war not the other way around. Slaves were not "set free" until almost 2 years after succession. The succession happened after the feds would not allow slavery in expanding new states. This over regulation triggered the succession. If that fight had not started, Slavery would have remained legal longer and been ignored.

BTW, some say the cause was the approval of the St. Lawrence Seaway which passed Congress by 1 vote. That moved the industrial centers from the south and coasts to the growing mid-west. That led to trade restrictions for cotton exports which fueled tensions between cotton states and textile states. The Anaconda Act cut off all trade outside the US for southern states.

This is a very complicated issue further complicated by why your/my education was influence by one side or the other. In the end both "sides" are correct as people are motivated by different issues.
