However, the south fought for states rights. At the time, slavery was practiced in many of those states. The south broke away when the Feds would not allow slavery in new states. At the time, there were legal slaves in northern/Union states.
The North fought using slavery as the galvanizing issue to motivate support for the effort.
Therefore, if you grew up in the Union states with their history, the war was fought because of slavery.
If you grew up in a Confederate state, the war was fought for the right to govern yourself. | |
