Very true, most southerners didn’t own slaves and the ones who did owned just a few and it’s only Hollywood convention that they all worked in the fields...many were children and older people.

Read a book on the subject once and I think I read that a slaves cost in the 1830-1850s was maybe 1000 dollars when an acre of land was worth a dollar or two and acre...soemething like that.

This book...can’t remember title but mentioned most slave holders worked alongside their field hands...It was totally wrong but it shows the value put on a persons labor versus the land....
