I don't think slavery was. It was simply a tool used by anti states rights people to fuel the war. Had slavery been allowed to die a "natural" death rather than force the losers to accept it, I think we would be in a much better place.

States rights as in its our right to keep slaves.

As for allowing it to die a natural death, well what are you going to tell the thousands in slavery during that time ?

Maybe: “Don’t worry, it’ll all be over in a few years, decades or generations.”
so 620,000 men died in the south over just slavery? And today the party trying to keep them in chains are the ones trying to tear down the statues? Weird
