At first... I was leave them be, they are part of history, Who was offended by them for the past 50+ years? Then I found out that many of these statues were built after the carpetbaggers left the south. This was the way the old confederacy used to assert that THEY were still in charge. That the South was still controlled by the "white people". That the southern states were not going to change and you can't make us. They built statues thinking it would intimidate the blacks so they would remember how it use to be. When I found that out I became more conflicted. I don't think those statues should be destroyed... but maybe moved to a Park or Garden owned by the daughters of the Confederacy... or some other similar group. Stone Mountain, I don't want it destroyed either. Maybe a second carving on another nearby mountain of Black men and Women that changed America. |
