I agree but it must be an investment that works for them otherwise they wouldn’t do it. You don’t hear about any baseball teams going broke. I just can’t fathom how they can generate the kind of revenue it takes to service those salaries. They are doing it though.

The majority of a team's income comes from the money the networks pay to broadcast the games. Here is a link to a Forbes article from 2012 that says Fox, ESPN and Turner Broadcasting will pay MLB $12.4 billion dollars through 2021. Add the money from the overpriced mechandise sales and you can see where they are making their money. This does not include the income from Regional broadcast networks.
