I started recaning a chair some years ago. It's not difficult or overly complicated. That said, I never finished it. With six, you will probably want to redo #1 after you finish #6. Buy a book or watch on-line videos. No much expense involved: Buy the cane and a few tools and have at it. If you try and then get discouraged, you won't be out much except your time.

It's one of those tasks that doesn't go well doing it a few minutes at a time, because wetting the cane is a key factor. Biggest problem for me was my back- it's close, tedious work and there's no comfortable way except to bend over. A lot.

Negatives aside, a good result is highly satisfying. I recommend you look into having it done professionally and then weigh your options. Check with antique stores to find someone. For me, about half way through #1 and looking at five more waiting, the cost of hiring it done would start to go down by the minute...
