She will be fine. The low amount of RAM is not that big of an issue. I would be more concerned about the available storage it has. I have a MacBook Pro from that same year and I haven't had any issues with it since. From the serial #, I found out it is a MacBook Air, which is not bad, but it will not be able to handle a bunch of demanding programs at once. Depending on your daughters major, this might not be an issue. For everyday computing and word processing, she will be more than fine. One tip when you do own it, do not update the operating system to the newer ones. The newer the operating system becomes, the more demanding it will be; therefore, on a older system you want to keep it at a system that is appropriate for the age of the computer. On my Pro, I do not think I even have OS High Sierra and I do not have issues. I know someone who has a older Pro running on OSX Mountain Lion ( much older OS), and also has no problems.
