Myself, I would jack up, drain (preferably with warm oil). Install diesel with maybe 10% oil. Turn by hand, drain. Could maybe put a strong magnet on outside of plug while turning.

I would not drive machine with diesel. Some assemblies will begin to bind up with no oil. That is why I would turn it by hand some with it off of the ground.

Your call on weather or not you tear it apart. Myself, I probably wouldn't unless big metal and a tractor that you can not afford to have go down at sometime throughout the season. Some sparkles in a planetary (that might not have ever been changed) is pretty normal.
