Have used these before on smaller stumps. Takes a while but works. It needs resharpened just like your chain saw chain. Cheaper than a saw chain.

Can use the nose of your chain saw bar to carve out center like a bowl. Just keep enlarging the bowl and work your way down from there. I use an old (but sharp) chain on the saw. Sometimes can carve out center deep enough that you can split the stump and pull out in pieces.

Other choice is to use chemical stump remover method. Look at the label of these stump out products and you will see most of them are just saltpeter. Buy your own saltpeter and bore holes in stump like directions on stump out. Let it sit the recommended waiting time. Then use your charcoal method. Stump will usually burn clear out through larger roots. I like to form a metal fire ring on top of stump to hold charcoal on top of stump. Might need to hold ring up off of stump a little to make a draft. Don't expect a blazing fire. It can smolder and burn for days. Have seen little smoke streams coming out of ground 5 or 6 feet from tree as the roots burn. As article below states, this method works best on a seasoned stump, not fresh cut. Depends a lot on species of tree.
