Agreed, it's amazing that it didn't roll on the way down. I suppose the tractor may have been tied down for battle. But you would think they would have been using it to spot planes as long as the deck was intact. Maybe it was a spare?
At that depth, the tubes in the tires had to have been compressed down to near-nothing. When the bead leaked water in between the tube and tire, the equalized pressure must have allowed the tire to resume its original shape.
