The USS Hornet was lost in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 27 Oct 1942. It was the last fleet carrier lost by the US in the war. Battle of the Coral Sea was 4-8 May 1942 with the USS Lexington lost and the USS Yorktown heavily damaged. The Hornet fought at the battle of Midway from 4-7 June 1942. There the recently repaired USS Yorktown was lost.
