C IL | Somewhere there is some paragraph that explains how your tax preparer writes a narrative or something to the IRS, which shows you made the most reasonable effort to comply with the law. I’d keep the certified mail chit where you sent out the W9.
I don’t think it is an automatic get out of jail free card, but it helps show you didn’t intentionally mislead the IRS.
Remember we have a voluntary tax system so the IRS doesn’t know you wrote that rent check unless audited or you send a 1099. Seeing as they told Congress they are now 12 months behind since the monthlong shutdown, it might be a while until they get back to you on figuring out you failed to report a 1099. | |
