Faunsdale, AL
They could probably be soft started, but the only way to soft start a single phase motor is with reduced voltage.

The reduced voltage reduces amperage like you want, but also reduces torque, so if you ever have to start it loaded, the motor may not turn until the voltage ramps up, so your motor's winding gets hot before it ever turns.

3 phase motors can be soft started with a VFD that essentially ramps up the frequency of the power supplied to the motor from 0 (stopped) to 60 (full speed) with the ability to select any rpm in between. Some can even go to 120 Hz if the load and motor allows.

You may have to go with soft starts on the single phase motors or change them out to 3 phase with an oversized VFD to take the single phase input and make 3 phase.

The weak point of single phase motors is the capacitors. They may last for many years or a few months. Good idea to have a multimeter with capacitance test capability and some spare caps or know where to get them.
