Kevin, I believe in nitrite form it is not useable to the plant, which in my mind would not affect water in that form. In nitrate form, the form in which a plant can use it is when it is bad for water. Not that nitrite doesn't turn into nitrate, just a different form of N. Probably more confused now then you were before. After printing this then studying up, I believe I might have gotten it backwards.
