We used them recently for a direct flight to Punta Cana. We had no problems. They do charge extra for everything. A charge for picking each seat, even those in the back. A charge for checked bags AND carry-ons. And a charge for everything to eat and drink except water.
However, my son also recently used them for a trip to Cancun and it was horrible. Their return flight home was delayed an hour at a time until it was finally cancelled at 5pm. Frontier did nothing for him! He had to find his own room for the night, his own taxi to and from that room and his own flight home the next day! Just a complete lack of customer service.
