There are enough eateries around Des Moines that you can eat for a month and not eat two meals at the same place.
There are historical museums in almost every city, town, and suburb. And some museums dedicated to TV and movie stars born in Iowa towns. Lots of covered bridges near Winterset west of Des Moines, but there are something like 100 more around the state. Some historical museums are only open week days, some only weekends, and some only by appointment.
There is a significant sized tourist guide to Iowa City and Coralville available by asking the right place on line. http://www.thinkiowacity.com
If you are driving to Iowa there are welcome centers along northern I-35, western US-20, and western I-80 each with a truckload of travel guides.
