I never use grain in a backgrounding ration if I have corn silage available, unless the gain goal in over 2.75#/day.

Higher energy limit fed grower rations will be more economical on paper, but they require a lot of bunk space and close management so they aren't for everyone.



Could you please give an example? I had asked about a ration with no corn and more corn silage but they told me couldn’t get over a 35 neg ration that wouldn’t gain much over 1.5lbs that way. Using 10 lbs corn silage, 7.4lbs hay mix and .6 lbs 40/20 protein. I questioned their mix as it was still a 18 lb mix even tho more water in it.
