That depends on your soil. I've seen blades in sandy soils loose thickness as they loose diameter, and actually be sharper when worn than when new.

I'm not disputing your point, sharpness of the cutting edge is a replacement criteria no one talks about, and it is something I check on inspection.

It's been my experience in no till that bearings will begin failing before the blades reach 14-1/2" anyway. I just replaced my rear row blades for that reason this year. Blades measured 14-5/8" to 14-3/4" and cutting edges were still sharp, but too many rows showed too much bearing wear. I could have reshimmed them, but why take the chance? Opener blades are cheap when viewed with regard to their importance.
