lately .png pictures seem to become more frequent. The format has been around for a while but was used less than .jp(e)g due to it's larger file sizes. Unlike .jpg, there is no loss in picture quality caused by .png. With faster internet and more memory available, .png becomes more popular. For normal requirements, both can be used.
