Sheet goods are great in manufacturing settings, but good old fashioned boards can work better in some situations.

Big flat table saws can cut the sheets easily, but if you are not set up to make clean straight cuts, it may be easier to deal with boards.

I have seen guys do magic with hand held circular saws that were equipped with sharp blades and were well adjusted. It usually takes a few sheets of sawing to get good at it.

Pine boards have been used for many years to build cabinets, they may be an option for this project? You could also consider a mix of boards

and pre-finished shelves. Doing that could save time and money while providing a finished edge.

You would probably have to change your plans if you decided to use boards.
