MDF - medium density fiberboard. You can get it plain like particle board, or faced like melamine. They sell edge banding that glues on the cut edge.
Unfaced takes paint well and is easy to work with.

Use screws and double glue everything. It soaks up a lot of glue, especially on the cut edges.
