Normally feed bottle calves at 6 & 6; went out at 2 with the extra feeding. Going to try and get them every 8-9 hrs through the cold stretch 2-10-6-2-10-6
One way to avoid feeding at -30F is to feed them at 2am & 10am when it's -28F; dug out the snow camo and stayed warm. Glad we are down to 20 on milk right now.
A couple nights ago we put calf coats on some of the youngest calves that were under 2 weeks old. Had one that just got over a case of scours and was worried about it getting too cold and relapsing from stress so we added a heat lamp to the top of the hut and used a 15 gallon barrel of hot water as a thermal buffer, it dhould give off heat most of the night and wasn't froze when I fed them and the calf was laying against the warm barrel. It seems to be working.
I have 2 five day old heifer calves that have become house guests in our garage. They will get moved to huts on Saturday. I suggested putting them in the garage and the wife said okay. Folding tables make good temporary fences when you need something quick.
Edit to add:
The Ritchie Omni 3 drinkers we installed this fall were not froze
